Modest Ranch Home Styles, Becoming Popular Again?

In late 40’s, the most popular home style built in America was the ranch. Because of the ranch’s simple design, this home was very affordable and quick to build, which allowed home builders to meet demand for economical housing that spawned after World War II when our men and women returned home from the war and began rebuilding their lives and starting families. Ranch homes were the main residential home style for a large number of Baby Boomers during the 50s and 60s. As the Boomers matured and became adults, they often sought out other architectural styles when building their own homes and setting up their own households.

Through the years, the ranch house style has become almost loathed for its lack of charm and character. Industry critics have called the ranch home just a single-story boring box, with little character and no in depth design, with a low roof pitch, and a large window almost always facing the street. Since ranch homes were steadily built in the mid-twentieth century and were regularly overlooked as quickly as possible with no regard for decor or distinctiveness, many labeled the ranch house as the worst of American home styles.

Yet, a modest ranch home is actually a quite livable style of home that offers some advantages. It's largest asset comes from its footprint or floor plan on an average lot, which allows for a nice large backyard in many residential neighborhoods, giving added room for, sandboxes, swing sets, and other children's recreational outdoor toys. A large backyard can also be a perfect place for entertaining guests, as well as family.

As real estate and home prices continue to rise, we may see the ranch home start to rise once again. Since this home style does not require unusual angles and unique building materials, homebuilders will still be able to construct a ranch house cheaper than more specialized homes. However, that does not leave out the option of customizing this home style to make them more interesting, appealing or energy efficient, and if positioned correctly on a piece of land, a ranch home can stand out as attractive from its lot, making it quite eye-catching from the street.

A Home is what you make it. Even ranch homes can be as charming as individual taste and budget. Also the same big backyard is good for young grandchildren and it can be just as great for adults with the addition of a pool, large garden, workshop or other amenities. Ranch homes can have gourmet kitchens, luxurious bathrooms, large fireplaces, or any other type of room that can benefit from being bigger than average. Remember, “It’s your home, make it the way you like it.

Ranch homes can be identified by their simple single story rectangular floor plan, normally in the shape of a U or an L. The Garage for a ranch house is attached to the home and generally leads into a laundry room or kitchen. Sliding glass doors will open out onto a patio. On the exterior of a ranch house windows are decorated with shutters and siding normally consists of wood, stucco, or brick. The roof on the ranch house is sometimes cross gabled but more often gabled.
